A Compound is mixture of various ingredients with its base polymer to obtain the required physical and chemical properties according to industry specifications. The roller industry uses a very wide range of elastomers, which is largely due to the numerous physical property requirements, as well as the exposure to a wide variety of chemicals seen during specific applications. Both of these factors are applicable when it comes to the market of rubber covered printing rollers.

In the changing world of print, there has been a constant need to seek out better rubber compounds to match the current trend of the day. As a roller manufacturer we are continually striving to meet the challenges that these changes present.

We at Sigma Rollers develop consistent, high standard rubber compounds to meet stringent requirement for roller manufactures for all industries. We also deliver custom mixed compounds. We only use top quality raw materials.

Control of the complete production of rollers is seen as key to manufacturing a product that is totally consistent. We are achieving this goal through production of rubber right through to the final machining of the finished roller.

At our rubber compounding facility we have the capability and capacity to both formulate and manufacture a range of rubbers to cater the print industry. Conventional, UV or Combi purpose makes no difference we have the compounds available in a range of hardness.

Our technical facilities include state-of-art testing equipment and machines that are regularly maintained and calibrated. This enables us to perform different tests and inspections right from raw materials to final product. These tests are for hardness, tensile strength, tear strength, abrasion resistance, resilience and ageing among others.

All tests are carried out according to internationally accepted standards and/or the customer’s requirements by qualified and experienced personnel.

Our qualified and experienced staff develops formulation and color matching for specific requirements. Our extensive formulae library is constantly enhanced to keep pace with the rapid technological development.

Nitrile NBR

The workhorse compound of roller manufacturing, nitrile rubber (NBR) makes up 60% of all polymer used in the industry. Sigma rollers UltimaEx Compounds are well-suited to a variety of roller applications because of their chemical resistance and physical properties, including:

  • Resistance to aliphatic hydrocarbons (i.e. oil-based inks),
  • Compounding versatility for a variety of end-use applications,
  • Cost effectiveness,
  • Ease of manufacturing.

Sigma Rollers’ Nitrile Rubber Compounds are highly resilient, abrasion resistant and offer good general resistance to solvents, oil and water. Our engineers also can formulate nitrile compounds to meet specific requirements of your project.

Sigma Rollers’ UltimaEx Nitrile/PVC Compounds [Ref.] offer the best characteristics of both nitrile and PVC, resulting in an excellent roll covering particularly for printing applications, which require resistance to chemicals plus a balance of physical properties:

  • Resistance to aliphatic hydrocarbons (i.e. oil-based inks), Improved ozone resistance over straight nitrile,
  • Improved abrasion resistance over straight nitrile,
  • Enhanced grinding characteristics.

NITRILE / PVC

Sigma Rollers’ Nitrile/PVC Compounds offer the best characteristics of both nitrile and PVC, resulting in an excellent roll covering particularly for printing applications, which require resistance to chemicals plus a balance of physical properties:

  • EPDM : EPDM is Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer and it is a synthetic rubber with excellent stability. It has resistance to ozone and UV effects, heat and has good color fastness (reduces color fading).
  • Hyplon
  • Silicon

Requirement for Roll Coverings:

In recent years, the printing industry has undergone major changes, and many of these changes have resulted in decreased roller life with complaints of rollers shrinking and hardening. These changes, driven by environmental reasons, changes in paper, and higher production needs, have resulted in more hostile physical & chemical conditions for the rubber covering. To simplify things slightly, roller coverings for offset printing press rollers must meet certain minimal requirements, which are outlined below:

Chemical resistance

  • Rubber covering must be resistant to printing inks.
  • Roller covering must have some resistance to the washes used in the printing industry.

Minimal heat build-up

  • Roller covering must exhibit minimal heat build-up characteristics, or low hysteresis.
  • Hysteresis is lost energy resulting from repeated flexing or deformation of the rubber covering.

Hardness stability

  • The ability of roller covering to maintain its hardness in the application is extremely important for the printing process.
  • This factor is affected by both the chemical resistance of compound and the ability of compound to have low heat build-up.
